Thanks for the advice, I will try a fresh install soon, in the meantime:

I seem to have managed to solve the problem by using the python 3 installed 
by conda instead of the python 3 in the kubuntu 16.4 installation (which is 
up to date).

running unter python2 I got an error about a missing io module, when I 
tried to launch an executable file with <ctrl>-clicking.
