I have recently experienced something similar with ubuntu installation. In my case, ubuntu stopped responding while installing grub2. Later I have discovered somewhere on the Internet an advice to reserve small space (about 2M) before first partition on hard drive. I don't remember exact link, but search for "UEFI grub unbuntu not responding"
