Something changed with Ubuntu, the auto config used to work with older versions. Anyway, I checked in a fix for the 0.75 tag, just run 'make config' and it will compile again (tested with Ubuntu 8.10).
You should use the 0.75 tag, sorry about the confusion. I know the versions are a mess right now, it's a long story but it should be back to normal once 0.76 is released and I can switch development back to the trunk.
