My window manager doesn't eat alt+mouse events. It's not a very popular one
though.

Sorry, no CAD experience. Not that I would think that they are particularly
consistent. Besides, 3d editing programs tend to become advanced enough
that they allow reconfiguring input.

I would prefer having rotation on rmb, pan on mmb and zoom on the wheel. No
modifiers necessary for the most-used commands. It does eliminate the
possibility of a context menu. On the other hand, it does make it easier
for new users to discover this feature. I didn't find out about it until I
read the source code...

Don't have much GTK experience, but I added mouse wheel support (attached).
Unfortunately, GTK doesn't support any way of configuring sensitivity, so
it's basically hit-or-miss how well it will actually work for different
users.
