It has been an age and a half since I used LeoCad and 3DS Max, but I always
had the best results exporting via .obj and importing them thusly.  The
.3ds file format wasn't very cooperative.  I know .obj doesn't retain as
much information as the .3ds format, but I got enough to be usable.

I know that doesn't fix the problem, but I hope it's a possible workaround
for you in the meantime.
