I think it has something to do with the grab list in Vendor.c. I have never
been able to reproduce it in my 3 or 4 attempts at it. nedit is also the only
app I know of that creates so many topLevelShells, and seems to have intimate
knowledge of what Motif is doing. It seems that when one of the shells
disappears, it stays on the grab list and all events go to it. Of course it no
longer exists, soooooo........
