I don't know MFC, so my opinion is based on what I see in Windows
applications. Perhaps MFC _has_ such features and few applications use
them.

There is no documentation on Xaw3d besides the source code and the README
file. You can find some extra information at Edward Falk's survey on
widget sets (http://www.best.com/~falconer/Widgets/).
O'Reilly published a X Toolkit Intrinsics programming manual. Early
editions had both Xaw and Motif versions. Currently only the later is
available, but is is still enough for good understanding of Xt and Xaw.
There is also a rather crude but complete reference on Xaw available in
PostScript at
ftp://ftp.x.org/pub/R6.4/xc/doc/hardcopy/Xaw/
XFree86 4.x has an enhanced version of Xaw, by Paulo Csar Pereira de
Andrade. It has some new features, including "themable" widgets.
Be warned that you are looking for trouble trying to use Xaw for any large
application. Xaw was created as an academic exercice on Xt, and is not
well suited for professional development.
