'Good' news: 
cutpaste/test1 also crashes with a very similar stack trace,
so one doesn't need to build NEdit to debug :-)

I just wonder what triggered the problem here: I did full rebuilds,
but did so in the past days/weeks (having full dependencies in the
Makefiles on my linux boxes). I didn't see this earlier on i86 linux, though
I reportedly got problems on alpha/linux.
The related sources seem to be untouched for some time now and a bit
cosmetics in the configure scripts wasn't suppose to trigger such a 
problem?! %-\
