I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but you can look at these web pages that has some small programs that display the colormap as a grid of cells http://muquit.com/muquit/software/mcmap/mcmap.html
or tells you the RGB of a color on the screen: http://muquit.com/muquit/software/grabc/grabc.html

I would suggest, look at the XltFontChooser widget in LessTif. That gives a list of all the available fonts, so looking at the code should give you some idea.
