And I confess I somehow like the current design, though it has
flaws, indeed. Might be just the difference between 
make
and 
(cd lesstif-1.2 && make) ; (cd kesstif-2.0 && make ) ; ( cd lesstif-2.1 && make)

or whatever the latter may have to look like ...
