What would be so bad about minimizing the amount of returned data such that it merely allowed the 'sender' to recognize the original email. Very little data and certainly not enough to accomplish spam. No attachments or inline graphics of course.

I would not want to restrict the acknowledgment of a incorrect receipt of mail.
