What has Solaris got to do with the (non-Cross) LFS book though? I think it's pretty explicit that we mandate a Linux host (specific kernel versions are mentioned in the pre-reqs), and don't support cross-building from a different operating system.

If the book does say x86 only, it's up to the Cross-LFS crew.  The
message above (linked to on the GCC releases page) does not mention the
m68k problems.

But http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2005-09/msg00934.html (continuing the thread I previously linked to) does, and Mark's pretty clear in stating he doesn't consider either the C++ or m68k bugs show-stoppers. Therefore I'll be upgrading to 4.0.2 some time next week.
