Hmm, you've just introduced optimization into LFS. AFAIK the LFS mantra
has always been no optimization (not that I'm fussed, but this change is
definitely wrong if "no optimization" is still the rule). At the very
least, this aspect needs to be documented more prominently ie: why LFS no
longer supports i386, why LFS is deviating from the GCC dev's defaults,
etc, etc.

I recall the old days when GCC-2.95.x used to default to -march=i586 :-)
