 I have exactly the same concerns regarding quality management, and
 supportability of the book.  I'll try and dig out my trivial(ish) script
 that does automatically create an LFS-formatted patch from the latest
 available patches.  That helps editors to quickly create a patch that can
 be tested in the same manner as other updates.  I don't see any particular
 advantages to having users build against what will quite likely be
 untested (by us) patches, and will certainly change throughout the
 lifetime of a stable book release.
