Thanks Matt,
The config.log was the farthest back that I detected something apparently
out of place;
"gcc version 4.8.1 (GCC)
configure:2118: $? = 0
configure:2120: gcc -V </dev/null >&5
gcc: error: unrecognized command line option '-V'
gcc: fatal error: no input files
compilation terminated.
So it SEEMS that a bad config was generated (seems to ME).
I should probably have said that I regard myself as a newbie at building
linux from scratch, though I am beyond simple point&click, drag&drop.
