Hi,
Also, I'm not sure whether the following is just North East (England)
dialect, but it really irks me:
Peter: "He didn't go to football yesterday"
Jane: "Didn't he not?"
Now, I always thought that the "correct" response was "Did he not?" or
"Didn't he?" - the above smacks of double negative usage.
They actually do this with all negative tag questions, regardless of the
contraction being used. Has anyone else come across this particular
misuse?
The thing that winds me up is when someone asks the opposiste question to
the one they want you to answer, such as
"Do you not think you should cook dinner?"
I'm never really sure how to answer them...
"Yes, I do not think that I should cook dinner."
or "Yes, I do think that I should cook dinner."
or just "I think that I should cook dinner."
Worse, "No, I do not think that I should cook dinner."
Regards,
@ndy
