Hi. I've been trying to photograph skunks lately, and got a chance on Sunday morning at about 4:30am. These photo's aren't great because there wasn't enough light, and/or I need an external flash: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/~robert/skunks/
The first couple are hard to see.. the skunk is in the center. I had to brighten the images. Across the street from me I think there are three skunks living in the woods (a non-official park in Montreal city). I call them the old man and the sisters. The old man skunk is gray and looks old and is grumpy. He never hesitates to spray, although because I stay ten feet away from him he never hits me. The sisters look young, with dark black and bright white stripes. The sister I photographed Sunday was the bigger one. She's the most docile of the three, and lets me get to within a couple feet of her. Nether of the sisters have ever threatened to spray me even if I spook them with the camera flash. It's worth mentioning that skunks seem to have very poor vision; if they don't see you move they will probably ignore you. A warning though... tell your children if a wild animal lets you walk straight up to it, it's probably an animal you want to stay away from (bears, skunks, lions). It is however really nice to get so close to a wild animal. I'll add more pictures if I get them. I work nights so I see one almost every day, but most are not friendly. robert
