Myself, I've never dabbled in the distro environment ever. (My first linux system where I learned how to use it was actually LFS. Interesting that my dos experience & the slackware book was enough to get a full system built). Ironically enough, mandrake/slackware were harder to learn [more program].
These days, I still use LFS (although about 6 months ago, I modified my LFS buildscripts to build for a mixed 32/64bit arch using a couple CLFS/CBLFS patches, JH's 64bit lfs book, and a few of my own tweaks.
