It's hard to say, but binutils-2.16 is rather old. Is there a particular reason why you're sticking with that particular combination of Binutils & GCC? The latest stable version of LFS used Binutils-2.18 and GCC-4.3.2, and even LFS-6.3 used Binutils-2.17. Personally, I'd recommend you use the latest development version of LFS, and if you run into any problems, report them to lfs-support. If they're bugs in the book's instructions, they'll end up on lfs-dev or in Trac where we can see them and fix them.
