Well, i assume you'll have to set kernel settings to match your hardware. I know there are some modules/setting for the ThinkPad laptops, so i'd say there are one for other physics, too. Next, I'd assume the button-events is something to configure in dbus or such. As you see, there has been a lot of "i think" and "i assume" and such - i'm not really an expert in this case.
