I haven't looked into or used UML in a very long time. I don't know how it works in terms of sharing RAM: whether it's dynamic or static. For instance, when using an emulator like vmware you set aside a set amount of RAM and that's all the virtual machine can use. If you don't use it all, the host system has less RAM to use which is a waste of resources of course. I don't know if things like vmware have fixed this by now, so this is more a speculation than actual fact.
