OK, so we can drop most of the lfs-specific patches for starters.

I strongly disagree. As shown below, trunk currently uses 21 patches, only 5 of which have an uncertain (or known unreported) upstream status. Obviously, the gcc4 branch adds a few more, but by and large they've come from upstream.

Anyway, both you and Jim appear to have missed the smiley accompanying my original remark! As one of the main contributors to the LFS book, I just don't want us carrying around patches forever as this increases the maintenance burden for a particular package.

Matt.

bash-3.0-fixes-3.patch - from upstream
bash-3.0-avoid_WCONTINUED-1.patch - from upstream
bzip2-1.0.3-install_docs-1.patch - need to verify upstream status and send upstream if applicable bzip2-1.0.3-bzgrep_security-1.patch - need to verify upstream status and send upstream if applicable
coreutils-5.2.1-suppress_uptime_kill_su-1.patch - LFS specific
coreutils-5.2.1-uname-2.patch - need to verify upstream status and send upstream if applicable expect-5.43.0-spawn-1.patch - Sent and rejected upstream. Looks like it may be a TCL bug we're fixing instead. See bug 1625. flex-2.5.31-debian_fixes-3.patch - Submitting this one upstream would be futile as the maintainers appear to be AWOL. gcc-3.4.4-linkonce-1.patch - not required as soon as we upgrade to gcc-4.0.1. gcc-3.4.4-no_fixincludes-1.patch - not required as soon as we upgrade to gcc-4.0.1.
gcc-3.4.4-specs-2.patch - LFS specific
glibc-2.3.5-fix_test-1.patch - From upstream
gzip-1.3.5-security_fixes-1.patch - need to verify upstream status and send upstream if applicable inetutils-1.4.2-no_server_man_pages-1.patch - although this is kind of LFS specific, a proper fix (i.e. one that links installation of a binary with its corresponding man page). At the very least a problem report should be sent. Not that a new release of inetutils appears to be immininent anyway... mktemp-1.5-add_tempfile-3.patch - Submitted upstream, no response (according to the patch header).
perl-5.8.7-libc-1.patch - LFS specific

util-linux-2.12q-cramfs-1.patch - problem (not patch) reported upstream, no response yet.
