I'm not voicing my opinion one way or the other here... not just yet. I just brought this to the list's attention for comment.
However, I'd just like to say that, to me, a 'sledgehammer technique' would be one that bashes the toolchain into submission - forcing it to do something it was not designed to do. I would think that better applies to all the hacks we add into the build. Telling gcc to make sure it's building itself correctly and purely, using a method for its stated purpose and freely provided by upstream hardly seems a 'sledgehammer technique.'
