It was discussed - on the same list where you spotted the commit. Furthermore the ticket has been in the system for ages, and it was suggested by one of the BLFS devs. Lastly, LFS doesn't tell a user to install GDBM, but just mentions that it is possible to substitute if they wish and the instructions are outside the book. Therefore, if a user does this, they're not building by the book and are in the same category as others who deviate.
