Maybe those parties are OK with deviating from upstream. I, however, am not. That's why I raised the issue upstream and that's also why I'm trying to help them out with an implementation that they will find acceptable. Simply dropping the patch helps no one, nor does complaining that "it's not ready in unpatched upstream and never will be". Coreutils is an actively maintained project, and if they receive an acceptable implementation, I'm confident it will be applied. That's why I'm currently trying to work with them to start heading in the right direction, rather than burying my head in the sand hoping that someone else will step up to the plate (like you said, the current patch has been around for 5 years and no one has bothered to whip it into shape in that time).
