A definite +1 from me. My very first LFS-build merged the 'fakeroot' (DESTDIR) & 'pkgusr' hints, & included man/info-page compression at the DESTDIR stage (amongst other things). I would dearly love to reap the benefits of such an approach in more regular builds, but my lack of scripting skills & inexperience in identifying non-compliant packages means i can't currently automate the process to a workable degree.
