I agree.  I like the concept of compiling all programs except kernel in 
ch6 and then do the "final touches" in ch8 along with the kernel as a 
wrap up.  There is a great deal of content around configuration of a 
base system that we could expand on if we wanted (I might write a hint 
to start the process).
