I like the idea of git. Certainly it would mean a change in process, but it 
also opens up new and interesting possibilities, such as collaboration on 
github.

There's some advantages of mailing lists. For example, they archive well, and 
become readily searchable on the interwebs.

Still, I agree with most of the points you brought up for consideration. 
Technology changes, and the way we interact online changes, too. 

If you go the route of a forum, just choose carefully. There's a lot of 
horrible forum software out there. Incidentally, Redmine (a tool I suggested 
some time back as a replacement for Trac) has a built-in forum and connects up 
to both Subversion and git.
