Ouch!  I started out with RedHat-6, then moved to mandrake, and from
there to LFS and eventually only LFS.  But when I got a PPC G5 (at
the end of 2005) I used fedora4 - at that time both ubuntu and
debian were too old, and on fedora I had to build a new kernel to
get everything working properly.

Hmm, narrowing the problem with fedora to "something changed in the
last 10 years" isn't particularly useful, but at least it is a start.

I think I'll google around to see if I get any ideas, and if not
we'll have to be a bit more specific about host distros.  What I was
really hoping to do was to try openSuSe, but playing with yet
another distro without understanding this error isn't a beneficial
use of my time.
