I just finished a new install of Xorg using the current instructions in
the book. Unfortunately I get several warnings about fonts. In
Xorg.0.log I have:
(WW) `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in
"/opt/xorg/share/fonts/X11/misc/".
(WW) `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in
"/opt/xorg/share/fonts/X11/100dpi/"
(WW) `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in
"/opt/xorg/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/"
The instructions we have creates these directories with fonts.alias as the
only file in each one.
These warnings can be fixed by running mkfontdir on the directories.
Perhaps a bit more of an issue is that tty1 gets a ton of warnings when
running twm (with xterm+xclock):
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
twm: warning: font for charset ISO8859-5 is lacking.
twm: warning: font for charset KOI8-R is lacking.
twm: warning: font for charset ISO8859-7 is lacking.
twm: warning: font for charset ISO8859-13 is lacking.
twm: warning: font for charset ISO8859-14 is lacking.
twm: warning: font for charset JISX0208.1983-0 is lacking.
twm: warning: font for charset KSC5601.1987-0 is lacking.
twm: warning: font for charset GB2312.1980-0 is lacking.
twm: warning: font for charset JISX0201.1976-0 is lacking.
twm: warning: font for charset ISO8859-5 is lacking.
twm: warning: font for charset KOI8-R is lacking.
twm: warning: font for charset ISO8859-7 is lacking.
twm: warning: font for charset ISO8859-13 is lacking.
and a lot more totaling about 55 lines.
I realize that these warning do not cause a functional problem, but many
users will be concerned. Perhaps we should put back some the the fonts
recently removed. I haven't tested it yet, but perhaps we need to add:
font-adobe-100dpi-1.0.3.tar.bz2
font-adobe-75dpi-1.0.3.tar.bz2
font-misc-misc-1.1.2.tar.bz2
