Jings, crivens, help ma boab - and I haven't even started to toast
the immortal memory yet ;)

You will recall that _I_ am used to seeing a lot of warnings in
Xorg.log on _my_ machines, and that I ignore them unless there seems
to be a problem (I vaguely recall that I looked at some either early
last year, or in late 2015, because of problems - probably in kde -
on one machine). If you want to add an instruction to optionally run
that command, I have no objection.

Whenever I use startx, even in a minimal build, I don't think that
there is anything useful on tty1 when I get back to it. Certainly, I
have to tee the output from startx, and stderr, to a file if I want
to examine it because of breakage. But then I have quite a lot in my
~/.xinitrc.

I repeat that you don't need both sizes.

If you are using unicode, why would you want legacy encodings such
as the many varieties of ISO 8859, and KOI8R ?

Many people do NOT need *any* of the old fonts.

So, when I did my testing for this
http://lists.linuxfromscratch.org/pipermail/blfs-dev/2016-November/032705.html
I did not notice any problems on the desktop relating to missing
fonts, other than the possible use in xscreensaver and the
requirement by old xorg-server for tigervnc.

In general I do not care about what gets written to stderr by
desktop programs, unless it is written to a term (e.g. when starting
a prog from a term because of problems, or when running fc-list etc.
