There's more than one way to skin a cat :)
One of the things I like about LFS/BLFS, and I think many newbies as
well can benefit from, is that the editors show alternative ways to
accomplish the same task. Sure it may be simpler to use an "if"
statement in your example, but a "case" statement works just as well.
More importantly, though, is that it demonstrates just how powerful
linux (and the bash shell) really is.
LFS/BLFS is a learning tool first and foremost IMHO, and as such the
emphasis should be more on variety rather than simplicity.
