Stylistic preferences are a matter of taste, but to me it seems a bit "unclean". I'm sure it's a holdover from when the case would be i686 or x86-64, but support for i686 is waning fast. Faster still without firmware patches for Spectre! And when it comes to different ways of doing things, I learned the KISS Principle many, many years ago, the hard way!
