Thank you for responding. I should have mentioned in my original post
that I read about alsamixer in the archives and have attempted it. I
received the following error:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
I'm uncertain what the error means.
I would suggest disabling OSS (you can enable the alsa compatibility
version under alsa, just disable the actual OSS) and see how that
works. Also, are they modules? Or built straight in? If they are
modules perhaps a module isn't loaded properly, a lsmod output could
be of use.

It was suggested this belongs in BLFS support. I don't want to ignore
etiquette and I'll post there in the future. However, as I've received
replies I'll continue this thread for now.
I followed the OSS suggestions and rebuilt my kernel with ALSA only.
That worked as regards alsamixer. I could bring it up and it shows my
card as Intel 440MX and chip as Cirrus Logic CS4299.
I increased volume and turned on everything but still no sound. I
thought perhaps a reboot was necessary but that also produced no sound.
I brought up alsamixer again and was surprised to find that everything
was set to zero volume and muted again.
Any suggestions? I see the sound card recognized upon booting. I've
obviously made progress with everyone's help.
