I would add that, if you had to reboot when you already installed
the "udev" package (chapter 6.58), when you restart, after the above
mentioned commands, you have to do
/sbin/udevstart
to populate /dev correctly.

It works (and indeed it is needed) for me. But if it is not correct,
please, someone rectify.
