I had a lot of errors - to the point that I couldn't even boot up - when I first completed chapter 8 (SVN), so I just skipped that. The hotplug system is a great idea for infinite extensibility, but I have a basic PC that has no hotplug-type devices other than a USB camera that I plug in maybe once every two or three weeks, so it's just as easy for me to run a shell script that loads the appropriate module and mounts the camera as needed.
