You must be using the Live CD (nobody else uses unionfs). After an
oops, you really cannot trust anything to be sane, so you need to reboot
and then retry.
If the problem continues, possibly some of the memory has gone bad.

Of course I do use the LFS-Live-CD. BTW a very nice peace of work
of real experts, the best LiveCD I ever used and extremly useful to
have with the Book!
And I did reboot and it did help ;-)
