Oh!
You have to remember that development does not happen on a released
book. I've mainly been using versions of gcc-4 since early September,
or perhaps earlier. Certainly, the errors might indicate something
wrong, but if so, it is more likely to be on the host system. For gcc,
a *large* number of unexpected failures indicates severe problems.
These are the sort of errors I
see with later versions of toolchain packages, or on different
platforms.
<sigh>
My problem, not yours! Particularly with random snapshots of toolchain
packages, on anything other than x86.
As Dan said, not everybody tests in chapter 5, so perhaps these
specific errors could be common, or be caused by unknown issues with
the host system. So, when you've checked that your package versions
and patches (if any) for the toolchain (binutils, gcc, glibc) agree
with the book you are following, you might be ok to continue.
I so much would like to be absolutly sure ;-((
We all like certainty, but it's in very short supply. If it was my
machine, I'd check (again) to see if I'd used the exact same versions of
packages and patches as are in the book, then carry on.
