Do you know what the chipset of your card is? As an example, my motherboard has an integrated network chipset VIA RHINE. I think you can see which yours is. Try /usr/sbin/lspci. Then ensure that you have included that chipset in the configuration of your kernel, either as a module or built-in. In the former case ensure that modules are in the right place.
