Here's a possibility. Someone else had a similar problem a few months back. Are the directories executable and readable? You should check /lib, /bin, /sbin, and the same in /usr. The directories for binaries like mount need to be in readable, executable directories, but the libraries do, too. This sounds like the same problem that person had because /lib had 0700 permissions, so the dynamic linker couldn't work properly.
