It's about making it easier and more efficient for people to help each other and exchange information regardless of the facilities (mail client, etc.) one uses. It is intended to more closely resemble the interchange that occurs in real conversations wherein a "thread" of context exists that makes things more coherent to both (all) parties. Snipping irrelevant text serves both purposes: easy coherency and bandwidth. More bandwidth is saved if people just ignore those who top post and/or don't snip. But few of us are so heartless. So the alternative is to both try to help on the specific problems and remind, in a civil manner, about the (n)etiquette. Unfortunately, many are ignorant or don't care and may respond in an uncivilized fashion. Then reminders end up making the threads longer than reasonable. So I don't waste my time with reminders anymore. And I often just go silent in the middle of a thread if the poster is too aggravating for my taste, whether in format (top-posting) or length (not snipping) or attitude. This is likely to be affected by my mood at the moment too. > Also, my reply to get a good mail client was meant to be a joke, but I > see you guys got trouble recognizing that... > Because the top-post/snip issue has been such a thorny subject on so many lists for so long a time. Humor becomes harder to recognize when the topic is a long-standing sore point, just as in a real-world relationship. > Tijnema > -- Wit -- http://linuxfromscratch.org/mailman/listinfo/lfs-support FAQ: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/faq.html Unsubscribe: See the above information page
