This seems to come up on the list regularly. I, too ran afoul of this 
obvious tip. In re-reading the text I notice that I must struggle to not 
see it as:

"IMPORTANT! Before issuing the build instructions for a package, the 
package should be unpacked [Well, duh!], yadda, yadda, yadda, and assume 
that the bash shell is in use [Well, duh!][Yeah, like that was really 
important </sarcasm>]".

The "...unpacked as user lfs, and a cd into the created directory..." 
part gets lost all too easily.

Not that I can think of how to resolve this problem. Sorry.
Perhaps it could be shown as a couple of bullet points:
  . unpack as user lfs
  . cd into the created directory
This might sink in easier.
