I think that the book's instructions place those dummy files rather specifically, not that those three files could cause any misadventure if left about. [Dan Nicholson has indicated (in a cross-post) that it could, potentially. I stand corrected.] I think it is probably a good habit to be cleaning up that thoroughly. The Linux environment is so complex that being "too clean" is virtually an impossibility. The answers here tend to confirm my impression that I have a brilliant grasp of the incidentals, and a fuzzy focus on the bigger picture.
