[Toppost]: While waiting for inspiration to hit me, I upgraded VMWare Server from 1.0.4 to 1.0.5. The probes now do not occur, with or without the noprobe in GRUB. Odd, but satisfying.

I added the BusLogic SCSI support in the kernel and it boots fine. However, it wastes about 10 seconds each checking for sdc, sdd, sde, ... sdo. Adding sdc=noprobe after the root in grub has no effect. Is this syntax wrong? What else can I do (besides set up 14 8M drives to ignore).
