What kernel are you running and what is the HW again?

It sounds like the interrupt system is losing time ticks and may just be 
  a symptom of old hw and (possibly) how the kernel handles the 
interrupts.  It's possible it can be fixed in the kernel configuration.

It could also be a HW error.
