Aha, well, found my problem. libz sources do run ldconfig as they should. They just didn't, in my case, because... well.... my path had a typo in it, so it couldn't find ldconfig in sbin. Guess I learned my lesson that I should copy paste rather than rely on my lousy typing. Thanks!
