This rings a bell with me. I was using the vesa framebuffer when I
first started using grub 2. If I remember correctly, to get it to work
I had to set a variety of options in grub.cfg, one of which was set
gfxpayload. Google on "grub gfxpayload" and see if it helps. 
I stopped needing to use this when I started using kernel mode setting.
