The /etc/default idea was from an Ubuntu forum.So it probably is a
debianism.

Yes, same kernel and config. Works with legacy grub, works with grub2 
but no fb console graphics.

I think I may install legacy. I have some partition shuffling I want to
do and I need for the bootloader to fully functional on this partition.
Since I already had Grub2, I thought I'd try it.
