You might want to try with the vga line commented out.  It might not 
make any difference, but it's worth a try.  You could also try 'vga=ask'.

Sure.  The only change you need to do is to copy the newly compiled 
version of the kernel to /boot.  If you change the name, of course you 
would need to change that in lilo.conf too.

It's been quite a while since I worked with lilo and I don't know if you 
are using the same partition for /boot or not for both your systems. 
AFAIK, the root line is only appended to the image line when booting.
