The su.1 problem was one of permissions. While LFS did not install su, it did install the man page. It apparently has been fixed in stable. I don't have a need for non-english man pages, so I don't want to install them if it is easily avoided. I found that ./configure --disable-nls parameter that handles it. It is documented in ABOUT-NLS file included with source. Thanks for your reply.
